Sports & Activities

Hiking, walking, nordic walking, mountain biking, cycling, golf …

The region around the Castel Fragsburg offers countless leisure opportunities in mountains and valleys. Discover just some of the many panoramic paths and gentle mountain trails, trekking paths and adventurous mountain trails or explore the forests and meadows. The Merano High Mountain Trail is a very special experience, leading around the Texel Group Nature Park.

The best way to know a place ...

...... is a long walk. Enjoy the huge variety of flora and fauna, historic city centres, contemporary architecture, busy streets and places of peace and solitude.

In Merano you may want to follow a signposted promenade leading you from the city centre to the Castle of Trautmansdorff. Here you are walking in the footsteps of Empress Sissi, the castle having been her summer residence - today it is one of the finest botanical gardens in Europe.

The nearby village of Lana has a sculpture trail, a cultural & educational nature trail and a Chestnut adventure walk. Do not miss a stroll through the vineyards and orchards outside the villages, enjoy the picturesque spots alongside rivers and canals.

Nordic Walking throughout the seasons

Nordic Walking constitutes an all round health program – it is an activity which takes in nature, fitness and fun. The wide choice of forest and meadow paths through the valleys around Merano are hugely popular meeting places for Nordic walkers.

A paradise for mountain bikers & cyclists

In Cross-Country-Style or along forest and meadow paths - the possibilities for biking are limitless. The choices range from gently sloping forest paths in the valley to single-track trails at 3,000 m altitude with countless degrees of difficulty between them.

A very different kind of adventure is the ‘Etschtalradweg’ – a cycling path from Merano to Mals. The ‘Vinschgerbahn’ - a small train - takes you from Merano to Mals, a distance of 60km. Here you can borrow a bicycle directly at the station and turn into the ‘Etschtalradweg’, taking you back to Meran over gently descending hills. At every stations you have the opportunity to leave your bike and complete the return journey by train.

Are you a cycle racer? A tour to the Timmelsjoch at 2,509 m or the Gampenpass at 1,512 meters is highly recommended - both destinations are used as tour stages by the ‘Giro d'Italia’ championships.
