Culture & Leisure :: Castles & Museums
You should not miss out on a visit of the Aerchologic Museum in Bolzano, where you can admire the 5,000 year old Ice Man "Ötzi". Ötzi was discovered by coincidence in 1991: Mummified and frozen with all his clothes and equipment - an archaeologic sensation and a unique snap-shot of a human being from the Chalcolithic Period. Very special museums: "Touriseum" in the Botanic Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle - South Tyrol's development into one of the most popular holiday destinations in Europe is interactively presented with fascinating components and room staging; the Women's Museum; the Messner Mountain Museum Firmian - designed and operated by extreme mountaineer Reinhold Messner; Tirol Castle - family seat of the Earls of Tyrol and eponymous for the country created under Earl Meinhard II in the 13th century; Juval Castle - residence of Reinhold Messner and place of exhibition for art collections from his expeditions; the Typewriter Museum in Parcines - over 2000 exhibits, 400 of which are exposed in the museum and 1600 in their own show-room (inventor of typewriters: South Tyrolean Peter Mitterhofer); Monteleone Castle near Cermes - a castle dating back to the 13th century with expansion dating back to the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. The round tour through the ornamental garden, picturesque courtyards, Gothic chapel and rooms of various styles offer an art-historic view of the various centuries - from the Middle Ages to Rococo.
